Specialty Medications

Specialty medications are typically bio-engineered and have specific shipping and handling requirements or are required to be dispensed by a specific facility. PEHP has partnered with Accredo to assist in dispensing most specialty drugs.

Receiving your specialty drug from Accredo or a contracted specialty vendor will assure you pay the lowest cost. (Benefit design may differ. Refer to your Benefits Summary.) Also, PEHP may require some specialty medications to be obtained from Accredo.

Accredo will coordinate with you or your doctor to provide delivery to either your home or your provider’s office.

Specialty medications may require pre-authorization. Check the Pre-authorization list or call PEHP at 801-366-7555 or 800-765-7347 to see if yours does.

Using Accredo is easy. Choose one of the options below:

Option 1 - Call Accredo

Step 1: Find out if your medication requires pre-authorization. If it does, contact your doctor so that he or she can obtain one. (See the Pre-authorization list section for details.)
Step 2: If required, once your pre-authorization is approved, call Accredo at
1-800-501-7260 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Mountain Time, Monday through Friday.
Step 3: Accredo will contact your doctor and make all the arrangements.
Step 4: Accredo will call you back to arrange delivery.

Option 2 - Have your doctor call

Step 1: Provide your doctor with your member ID number (shown on your prescription drug ID card) and ask him or her to call 1-800-987-4904.
Step 2: Accredo will contact you or your doctor to arrange delivery.

The table below shows how you can obtain certain specialty medications. You may be required to go through Accredo. Even if not required, you will likely pay less by going through Accredo or another specialty vendor.

For contact information for specialty vendors other than Accredo, call PEHP at 801-366-7555 or 800-765-7347.

* Requires Pre-authorization.

Do you want to lower your pharmacy out-of-pocket costs?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if your prescription is available in an equivalent generic; many are, and PDF Icon preferred generics have the lowest copayment.

A preferred generic drug must contain the same active ingredient in the same equivalent strength as the brand-name version and meet the same FDA standards.
